Coaching Lessons
This week's lesson aims to give you and your players the confidence and the skills they'll need to keep the continuity going by offloading in the tackle.
All successful modern rugby teams have some sort of offloading ability built into their game plan.
There are three ways to offload in the tackle: The one handed offload in the tackle; the two handed offload in the tackle and finally the push pass from
the ground.
Why is the offloading in the tackle so important in modern rugby? With the modern defensive lines it is more and more difficult to get behind the
defensive line, but with the offload it is very easy , because no defensive team can set a defensive pattern against the offload in the tackle.
It is very important for player to realise that firstly he must decide to go to ground in the tackle or get his hands and body in the correct position to
execute the offload. To do this coaches must teach their players only to offload if they have eye contact with the receiver's hands and when the
receiver asks for the offload.
To put all this in prospective Jan Oberholzer designed this great contact drill in which to give a team as much time as possible in a training session to
practice the three variations in the offload - and remember only practicing can rectify  weaknesses in a team's offloading capabilities.
