Coaching Information : Move of the Week
Week 35
This week we look at a move called the "Unders Pass Move". The "Unders Pass" or short pass has become more known as a running line than a move, but it still works. This move was in the test between South Africa and the All Blacks on 26-08-06 in Pretoria.
" For me the "Unders Pass" or short pass is more a running line, which teach players how to beat defensive lines, than being a specific move. We can debate if it is a move or a running line, but what we all know is that it still works against modern defenses. " - Jan Oberholzer
Lets look at the "Unders Pass" move

Fly-half Pretorius passes to inside center De Villiers

De Villiers catches the pass and starts drifting

He draws two defenders with his running line

He offloads in the tackle to outside center Fourie who runs straight.

This is a running line, which each player must know by heart if they want to succeed in modern rugby. The only way to teach players this running line is with running and passing drills. (See Jan Oberholzer's Coaching CD-Rom - "80 of the Best Coaching Drills")
Fourie catches the ball and runs through the gap.

Why does the "Unders Pass" move work? Defenders defend in channels and if two attackers come into one defender's defending channel the defender must decide which defender he must tackle and in this example it was the wrong attacker.
He scores under the posts
