Week 37
This week we look at a great "unders" move with the full-back, coming into the back-line on the outside, from a scrum. This move was done in the Currie Cup match Blue Bulls Vs Cheetahs on 30-09-06 in Pretoria.
" This must be one of the great modern rugby moves and it work twice in one match. Well planned and well executed and the most important fact it is from a set piece, the scrum. Naas Botha, ex-Springbok fly-half and now rugby commentator, always said that for him it is easier to break the line with the forwards in the set piece, than when the are stringed across the field in a defensive line." - Jan Oberholzer
Lets first look at the "unders" pass running line
The fly-half receives the ball from the scrum-half at a scrum and passes to the blindside wing coming in. Look at the two "dummy" running centers.
NOTE: It will take about 30sec. for video file to load.
The blindside wind receives the ball, with the two "dummy" runners stopping the inside covering defenders.
Video Clip of the move
The blindside wing starts to drift across the field committing more defenders.
The full-back comes into the back-line and receive an "unders" pass from the blindside wing. Look at defending wing (yellow) turning around to try and stop the full-back.
This is a great move when it is done on the outside from a scrum, because there are enough elements to stop the covering defenders.
The defenders are too slow and the full-back runs through the gap,
They score easily .
