Modern rugby defences
Week 11
This week we start with a new series showing our coaches how to
develop an effective phase defensive system. We start with the
most basic drill, the
"Straight defensive line drill", which teaches
players the art of keeping their defensive line straight
.
" To develop an effective phase defensive system, coaches must start with basic of
basic drills and this drill is one of them. This drill teaches players the art of keeping
their defensive line straight, because without a straight defensive line their will be
gaps in the defensive line for attackers to run through."

their starting positions.)
Key coaching points
  • The players must use their communication
skills to communicate with each other.
  • Players must use their secondary vision to
keep the line straight in relation to the
    players next to them.
Advantage of the Drill
This is a drill that teaches players to keep their
defensive line straight at all times, especially by
shooting forward and falling back.
Lets see how the Joberrugby Academy execute the drill.

the center and then running backwards,
ending at the opposite sides.)
On the signal of the coach the two lines of
players move forward.
They clap hands in the center..
    Note:
    1. To make it more difficult for the
players, the coach can bring in
different moves in the center to
    disorientate the players.
    2. The coach can give the moves
different numbers, which he call out
and the players must act accordingly.
They move backwards to their starting
positions
