This week we look at the basic technique of
placing of the ball in the contact or tackle
situation

" From young to old this is one of the basic skills most neglected by
coaches and players. Many players still place the ball next to their
bodies for the scrumhalf to burrow for the ball and the result is a
slow ball with which you can never beat modern defenses " -

The player must hold tightly
onto the ball, while going
down in the tackle or contact
situation.
The moment he makes
contact with the ground he
must place the ball out as far
as possible.
After placing the ball he can
cover his head with his arms to
protect his arms against
trampling.
For an example of placing the ball in the contact situation we use a live video clip
from an Australia match - for us they are the best rucking team in the world. How
many times have you seen George Gregan burrowing for the ball?
You can also see in the example that Australia ruck behind the ball, while New
Zealand and South Africa ruck on the ball, which give them a much slower ball.

of the ball

Remember you can only beat modern defenses if you get quick balls from rucks.
