Contact Skills: This week we look at the
correct and the most effective way how to do
the clean-out at the ruck.

" The clean-out at the ruck is very important to
secure your own ball.  Most of the players'
body positions are to high for an effective
clean-out. " -
Jan Oberholzer
Lets look at an effective clean-out
The player, in this example Martin
Correy of England, gets into a low
body position for the clean-out,
while the opposition player gets
into a position to rip the ball.
The player is now in the correct
low body position to execute the
clean-out.
The player cleans the opposition
player of the ball. Note that it is not
only a shoulder charge, but he
uses his arms to wrestle the player
of the ball.
The opposition player is now off
the ball and a second player
bridges over the ball to secure a
clean ball.
