Individual Kicking Skills: This week we look
at the art of
 Goal Kicking in modern rugby

" Goal kicking is an individual skill and a player needs a
kicking coach to fully develop the skill, but I think every coach
must at least know the basic of place kicking to help a
player if he must ." -
Jan Oberholzer
The technique of Goal Kicking
In this example we use two of the top young kickers in South
Africa i.e. Morne Steyn (Blue Bulls and Bulls Super 12) ans Naas
Olivier (Leopards)
The run-up: Body upright and eyes on
the ball
The run-up:  Look at the balance of
the upper body.
The kick: Opposite shoulder upright to
help his body to get  over the top of
the ball
The follow through: The kicker must
visualise that he kicks through the ball.
Important Tips for Aspiring Coaches

Kickers must be helped to visualise themselves kicking successfully.
Do this 3 or 4 times after placing the ball and before kicking it. This
visualisation is the most important element, along with positiveness, for
    successful goal kicking.

    •  Need to set goal kicking tasks in a proactive consideration of the % of
successful kicks they want in a game, e.g. 80% kicking rate in front, with
those to the side as a bonus.

    •  Look for potential kickers in players who have natural timing in their
    kicking.

    • Have your kickers warm up before a match with 3 or 4 kicks to the
posts. Their focus is provided for in this way.
