We look at a contact skills drill called: "The low body position drill", which teaches players a low body positions.
|
"There is only one country where the low body position of a player in contact comes natural and that country is New Zealand and in all the other countries low body positions must be coached. I designed this drill for just that and it is the only one of which I know that teaches players low body positions " - Jan Oberholzer.

|
The setting out and execution of the drill.
|
Advantage of the drill:
A contact skills drill in which players can
practice their correct body position for
the drive and/or clean-out.
Description of the drill:
1. Two players start the drill and work
together as a pair, while five players take
charge of the contact shields.
2. On the coach's signal the player with the
ball runs towards the first shield, puts the
ball down and then drives with low body
position into the shield. The second player
picks up the ball and runs to the second
shield and puts the ball down before driving
into the second shield. This is repeated
through to the end of the drill.
Equipment needed:
2 - marker cones
1 - rugby ball
5 - contact shields
The player puts the ball down.
|
He drives into the shield with the same low body position.
|
The second player picks the ball up to continue the drill.
|
Note: The moment the player puts the ball down he is in a low body position and he continue with this low body position when driving into the contact shield. This is an easy method to teach players a low body position for the drive and clean-out.
