There are two ways to steal the oppositions ball in a line-out
1) You can outwit or out think the opposition, i.e. you get into
position and get up before the opposition. It is like a lottery where
you need lots of luck.
or
2) You can use illegal means, which is against the laws of rugby,
but you get away with it and use the advantage you gain to steal
the opposition's line-out balls.
South Africa uses both methods to steal the
opposition's balls.
We shall now look at the illegal ways they use to steal the opposition's ball.
1) Using the hooker illegally as a supporter in the front of the line-out
What does the rules say?
The rules say that the hooker can only join the line-out as a supporter if the
ball passes over his head.
Let's look at a few examples

line-out before the ball is
thrown-in

2) Stepping across before jumping or closing the gap before jumping
What does the laws say?
The laws say that the jumpers must keep the gap between them open and
must jump straight up.
Let's look at a few examples

gap

It is unbelievable that top referees don't pick up this
