Scrums - We look at the new scrum method of the All Black's front-row in which they hit from the top, perhaps illegally so. This was in the Tri-nations match between New Zealand and Australia on 8-07-06

" The Australian front-row was badly beaten on Saturday by an All Black front-row that gets a bigger hit by hitting from the top. By hitting from the top the front-row gets much more momentum. I think it is illegal, because they don't crouch first and then hit. In the Super 14 the Crusader's front-row uses this technique during the whole series. " - Jan Oberholzer
Lets look at the All Black's hit from the top

NOTE: It will take about 30sec. for video file to load.
The referee calls "crouch" and the Aussies crouch, while the All Black frontrow is still in the upright position.

Video Clip of the Hit
After a while the All Black frontrow goes down and hit, while the referee calls "hit".

The Australian scrum is on the back feet after the hit and the All Blacks demolished their scrum.
This is something new for coaches to try, till referees stop this method of hitting from the top.
