Scrums - We give coaches some pointers on effective frontrow play in the scrum, by using the Springbok frontrow as an example.
|
" Many coaches who are coaching teams have never played in the frontrow and because of that they got very little knowledge on frontrow play, but the few pointers we give this week can help a lot towards the understanding of the complexity of frontrow play. Always remember - "That scrummage requires concentration, discipline and co-ordination." - Jan Oberholzer

Look at the props straight back and how the flankers and locks get their shoulders into the niche where the prop's buttock meets his thigh.
|

|
The prop gives the loosehead the binding on the waistband of his trouser for a solid bind.
|
Note:
Once the three are bound
together, the props should
push their inside shoulders
forward so that they are in
front of the hooker This will
tighten the binding even
more, and squares up the
scrum completely.
Note:
The locks reach through the prop's legs, as
far round the upper thigh as possible to grip
the waistband of the shorts. When he got his
grip he turns his fist upwards to push
upwards for a tighter grip. If the lock don't turn
his fist upwards he will just hang on the prop.
Note:
Because the hooker had taken up the crouched
starting position, the front row can now completely
crouch, and present, sitting back on the props.
The position of their feet:
Hooker - his feet about shoulder width apart, his
right foot slightly ahead of the left.
Loosehead - right foot is directly inside and in-line
with the hooker's left foot parallel to the touchline;
his left foot 300mm forward of the right, just outside
the line of the shoulders.
Tighthead - both feet shoulder width apart and
parallel, rather than off-set, but with a stronger foot
position more backwards.
Note:
The props with their
heads up, shrugged into
the shoulders, eyes
looking from under their
eyebrows directly at the
target area they will
contact on engagement.
Note:
Once the front rows have engaged, it
is vital that having made the 'Hit', that
the unit as a whole 'Chases' the hit
through. Immediately, to develop
forward momentum, or to resist
opposition push, the unit must move
forward again. This requires short,
fast controlled foot movements from
the players in unison.
