This is a new rucking drill from the Cheetahs team, which we call the "Advanced rucking drill". This is a great drill that teaches the skills and body position for the clean-out.
Counter rucking is a new phenomenon in modern rugby and we look at two examples from the Tri-nations final between New Zealand and Australia 0n 13-09-08.

This week we look at great try from Bryan Habana,, which shows how important it is for the supporting player to run himself into the correct position to score the try.
This week we look at an outside move in the backline, which we call "The wing cut move". In this move the wing cuts to the inside to receive a pass.
This week we show coaches a great defensive drill, which we call "The defensive rucking drill". This is drill in which players and teams can practice their defensive rucking.
We look at the skill of ripping the ball in the contact situation. We look at an example and give a drill with which players can develop this skill
Blaming the new rules Most of the coaches in Europe are blaming the new ELV’s for the poor rugby that is being played in this part of the world. This is what Shaun Edwards, the Wasp head coach, was saying on the new rules. - “We have a policy of trying to run everything and always attack both with our defense and with our offence. I think anybody looking at it would have to say that is not the tactic to use to exploit the new rules. At certain times it's very much like a game of Aussie rules isn't it?” This is a lot of nonsense, these are the coaches using the ELVs as an excuse to risk nothing, to kick into the opposition territory at every opportunity, and play safe rugby. This mindset is not created by the rule changes but is a continuation of a theme that winning in rugby is everything. Every modern rugby coach who had watched the Tigers /Wasps match over the weekend can only agree with this. We must not allow the epidemic of criticism become a loophole for some of the coaches who refuse to think their way around the new rulings and keep their teams positive and the game thriving for spectators and supporters who want something more out of rugby. It was great to see a team like Saracens use their back row and backline off the scrum to utelise the five metre offside line to score two great modern rugby tries. That is what we call positive coaching and if you are a joberrugby coach then you will coach positively.

" Robbie Deans has got a very astute rugby tactical mind as well as a good affinity with the players. In passing comments with the fellows that I'm still in touch with, I hear he's a man that talks about positivity and makes sure that he concentrates on what players are good at, rather than harping on negatives." - Wallaby lock Justin Harrison on one of the great modern rugby coaches.

Jonny injured again. Another injury setback for Jonny Wilkinson overshadowed an Iain Balshaw hat-trick in Gloucester's 39-23 win over Newcastle. The Falcons number 10 was helped off the field after appearing to hurt his knee when he was cleared out of a ruck in the 25th minute. Wilkinson, who has been plagued by fitness problems since the 2003 World Cup, is now facing another spell on the sidelines after suffering suspected ligament damage. Will we ever see this rugby genius showing his full potential again?
Injured again?
1st October 2008 I am the forwards coach for a university side in the UK, we are having particular trouble with our lineouts - are there any drills that spring to mind that will aid the players in ensuring execution of the lineout is done effectively. I am a strong believer that the more time taken at a lineout the more likely it is to go wrong! Are there any drills which will help the team speed up the time taken at lineouts? I have found your site extremely useful and the boys have loved the drills! Regards Joe Johns
